Construction project schedules can be unwieldy, and quickly spiral out of control without a steady hand to guide them. Learn a systematic approach to creating and managing construction schedules in this course. Through lectures, classroom exercises, and questions and answers, you will learn the skills and best practices necessary to effectively plan and manage projects of any size, such as work breakdown structures, scheduling techniques, scheduling software, cost allocation, and claims management. You will also gain a deeper understanding of scheduling and project control. By the end of this course, you will know the ins-and-outs of planning, managing, and updating a project from design to completion.

Apply the basic concepts and techniques of creating and managing a construction program, including planning, scheduling, and control.

Apply the principals of cost and resource loading and identify the relationship with the estimate

Identify common project delays and propose solutions to better approach them

Program Description – September 2023

This two-year postgraduate certificate is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to plan manage and effectively execute construction projects. Students will study investment appraisal for development projects. Planning and control of construction projects; and soft skills related to effective communication and negotiation leadership. Students will learn to incorporate building code construction methods and simple construction techniques into their projects. Learning is enhanced through the use of group work case studies and field visits. The graduation project allows students to apply synthesize and integrate the knowledge they have acquired in a real project. Management-oriented professional or co-op terms give students the opportunity to apply and practice knowledge and skills in preparation for the workplace. This program prepares students to take various professional certification exams with a focus on CAPM (Certified Associate Project Manager) PMP (Project Management Professional) PQS (Quantity Surveyor Designation Professional) and Gold Seal certifications. The co-op preferred stream covers a single business co-term and not a career-oriented management course. Laptops are needed for class work and projects.
